The future is looking rather bleak for President Joe Biden and his merry band of Democrats in Congress. Yet another poll has revealed that the American public is becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the direction of the country and the president’s performance during his first six months in office. This raises an important question: Can the Democrats reverse this trend soon enough for the next election, or is the proverbial writing on the wall?
Americans Becoming More Pessimistic
An ABC News/Ipsos poll shows that about 55% of Americans are “pessimistic” about the direction of the country. This finding is a stark contrast to the results of the same survey published May 2. Then, 36% were “pessimistic” about the nation’s trajectory, which means the numbers have jumped almost 20 points. ABC reported:
“In the early May survey, Americans were more optimistic than pessimistic by a 28-percentage point margin. Optimism is now under water by 10 points. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, fewer than half — 45% — now report feeling optimistic about the way things are going, a significant drop from about two-thirds (64%) in the May poll.”
According to the news network, “The decline in optimism has occurred across the board among Democrats, Republicans and independents,” and the network noted that “optimism is down about 20 points among Democrats and Republicans and down 26 points among independents.”

The poll also showed that Americans’ approval of the way Biden is handling the COVID-19 pandemic has dropped considerably. About 63% approve of his performance in managing the coronavirus, which is still a majority, but it is also a nine-point drop from March. ABC News acknowledged that these results reflect “the growing concern that lockdowns could be reinstated and already vaccinated Americans could need a booster shot as the highly contagious delta variant now is estimated to account for 83% of all new coronavirus cases in the United States.”
But it gets even worse for Biden. The survey shows, “Fewer than 4 in 10 Americans approve of the president’s handling of immigration and the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, crime and gun violence.”
Is There Any End to This Downward Spiral?
Enthusiasm was high among Democrats when Biden took office. He had made soaring promises to the American people and promised an end to the chaos brought on by former President Donald Trump. In him, many saw a return to normalcy and viewed Biden in the same way as right-leaning voters viewed Trump in 2016.
However, it appears the president has already disappointed many who believed he would get the country back on track. His poor handling of the migrant crisis, burgeoning economic concerns, and his embrace of a radical leftist agenda have likely left many wondering if their faith in him was ill-advised. So, will Biden – or perhaps Vice President Kamala Harris – be able to turn this ship around in time for the 2024 presidential election? At this point, it ain’t looking good.
