After an emotional trailer involving a teary-eyed Republican senator and powerful testimonies from U.S. Capitol police officers, it appears the Democratic House Select Committee on the January 6 riot are ready to start the feature film. In the opening scene of the political blockbuster titled: “Get Trump Part II: The Reckoning,” the gaggle of Democratic lawmakers and anti-Trump Republicans have requested a slew of records ostensibly designed to get to the bottom of the origins of the assault on the U.S. Capitol building. But when this movie concludes and the credits are rolling, will any of it matter?
Select Panel Seeks Lots of Records
Politico published a report indicating that the House Select Committee is asking for a broad swath of records they can use to learn more about the January 6 riot. Much of what they are requesting pertains to communications between Trump’s White House and people affiliated with the former president. The author wrote:
“The select panel is also seeking records relating to attempts to place politically loyal personnel in positions across the government after the election; the planning, organization and response to January 6 and earlier; and attempts to overturn the rule of law and overturn the 2020 election. One segment of the request notably seeks ‘documents and communications related to the mental stability of Donald Trump or his fitness for office.’”
The committee has requested “all documents and communications within the White House” that involve Trump allies like Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, Kayleigh McEnany, Peter Navarro, Roger Stone, Kimberly Guilfoyle, and all of the former president’s children except Tiffany Trump. Politico’s Kyle Cheney tweeted a list of each individual in the request.
Along with information regarding former President Donald Trump’s mental health, the Democratic Witch Hunt Task Force™ is requesting all “documents and communications concerning possible attempts by President Donald Trump to remain in office after January 20, 2021.”
The panel also asked for any communications related to the Insurrection Act or martial law.
Even more noteworthy is the fact that the Democratic Witch Hunt Task Force™ is expected to send requests to social media and telecommunications companies to provide records that might be connected to the attack. Some of those included in this request are Republican lawmakers and congressional staffers.
You read that right.
The select committee is going to try obtaining the phone and social media records of their political opposition.
Will America Care?
Given the broad, sweeping swath of information requested by the select committee, this process could drag on for quite some time. Indeed, compiling all of that material is no small task. Perhaps the Democrats are trying to make sure this investigation crawls on for as long as possible – potentially long enough so they can weaponize it during the 2022 midterm elections.
The question is: Will it even matter?
When the Democrats failed to form a 9/11 style commission to further investigate the assault on the Capitol building, it was because Republicans could see that this would be nothing more than a politically motivated farce. Indeed, now that the Democrats have formed their own committee anyway – one that includes their favorite anti-Trump Republicans – they have not done a very good job of concealing their political motivations.
Combine this with the fact that the FBI recently announced that it found “scant evidence” proving that the assault was preplanned, and it becomes apparent that the committee will not likely be able to find any material that would be compelling enough to weaponize. In the end, it will have been an enormous waste of taxpayer money, signifying nothing.
So, when they finally reveal their findings, America may well see that this entire debacle was entirely devoid of substance. Moreover, even if the Democrats and their close friends and allies in the activist media find something they can spin, their narrative will always be in doubt because the only reason this fiasco is even underway is that the left needs a cudgel with which to hammer Republicans. This reality will not be lost on the American public. But, with the way the Democrats are performing at the moment, they will need all the help they can possibly get.
