To say that President Joe Biden is having a tough time dealing with the migrant crisis would be an understatement of gargantuan proportions. Of course, a more cynical person might imply that this particular matter is going exactly according to plan.
But either way, it is apparent that the White House is not up to the job when it comes to stemming the flow of legal and illegal migrants to the border. In light of this, some Republican governors have decided to take action. For example, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a vocal critic of Biden’s immigration policies, has begun arresting illegal aliens discovered hiding out in the Lone Star state.

In response to Biden’s ineptitude on the border issue, Gov. Abbott has launched his own border security initiative. In a tweet posted on Thursday, Abbott wrote, “Texas has begun arresting illegal immigrants who are trespassing in Texas or vandalizing property & fences. They are now being sent to this jail rather than being released like the Biden Admin. has been doing. We are adding more officers, National Guard & jails.”
The Epoch Times reported that at least 10 people have been jailed so far, with more arrests expected. “The detainees are being held at what had been an empty state prison in Dilley, Texas, about 100 miles north of the border city of Laredo,” the report says, citing Robert Hurst, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The facility can hold more than 950 inmates.
All of the individuals arrested are single adult men. Val Verde County Attorney David Martinez told The Epoch Times that he had been “advised last week that the number of arrests of illegal immigrants could rise to as many as 100 to 200 per day.”
In June, Abbott announced his plans to arrest illegal immigrants during a Border Security Summit in Del Rio. “While securing the border is the federal government’s responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows. The state is working collaboratively with communities impacted by the crisis to arrest and detain individuals coming into Texas illegally,” he said.
Abbott also indicated that Texas would continue construction on the border wall, which began under the Trump administration. “In the Biden Administration’s absence, Texas is stepping up to get the job done by building the border wall,” the governor said in a written statement. “Through this comprehensive public safety effort, we will secure the border, slow the influx of unlawful immigrants, and restore order in our border communities.”
Will the Border Crisis Ever End?
The fact that Republican governors are being forced to essentially take the lead in maintaining some semblance of border security is not something that voters will forget in 2022 and 2024. Indeed, a recent poll showed that voters in battleground states believe Republicans in Congress would do a much better job at dealing with immigration-related concerns.
Immigration will likely be one of the issues on voters’ minds when they head to the ballot box in 2022. If the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress are unable to get it together, it will be yet another in a series of nails in the party’s coffin when the midterm elections arrive.
